[en] not
long ago i have made a 3 day trip to amsterdam with my dear friend a. the city has been on my bucket list for a long time but due to work,
my relationship, our house moving and the whole shebang i did not
really get to travel around – apart from the small trip to the shoe
step of the year in hamburg last year. i must have lagged far behind
the great amount of fashion bloggers who already have visited the
dutch capital. but the city is still pretty nevertheless!
our
hotel, the hampshire manor was incredible. the elegant interior and
our extensive, spacious and stylish room compensated for the long and
unwieldy trip which we had previously taken upon ourselves.
amsterdam
is comparatively small as a capital or city and very idyllic with all
of its canals and bridges and narrow, colourful houses. the
population scarcely breaks the one-million barrier and for each
inhabitant of the city there's at least one bike. generally the city
is very bike-friendly and rather not designed for automobiles. two wheels are better than four in Amsterdam.
since
the city is very small it is worth to explore it on foot. i prefer
this way of exploration because then you've got the chance to
experience the atmosphere of a new place or city much better than by
hiding yourself away in subways and similar. but what is also loads
of fun is taking the tram. the network is extensive so that every
corner of the city is well connected. it also drives very slowly,
which offers a great view onto the city, together with the panorama
window displays. if you pass the nights near oosterpark just like me
and a. the tram is a great possibility to get faster into the urban
core – although a walk wouldn't have taken more than 30 minutes
(who could state this about paris, berlin or even london?!). furthermore i have never seen a ticket boot directly INSIDE the tram! and the tickets are also very cheap with 2,40€ for 1h and 7,50€
for 24h.
today i want to share some of my most beautiful photographic impressions
out of amsterdam with you, along with some advices about what to see
and experience. the city itself is incredibly photogenic and offers
loads of great sceneries for outfit shootings. furthermore amsterdam
offers a broad cultural program, great museums, picturesque little
cafés and restaurants and a laid back, multicultural and open
lifestyle. a canal tour is essential, especially if the weather is as
nice as how we have experienced it on day 1 of our trip. to
experience amsterdam from the water is priceless!
it
is optional to visit one of the countless coffeeshops which can be
found on every corner in amsterdam. but the city offers so much more
than the possibility to get high or to stare at naked boobs in
display windows.
day 1
tag 1
on
our first day we were blessed with amazing weather. the perfect blue
sky made the canals and narrow houses look even more pretty. at first
we have searched for a fitting place for some outfit photos before
finally joining a walking tour to get to know the city better.
we
decided on the sandeman new europe amsterdam free walking tour. it is
free of charge, but by courtesy you should leave a tip for your guide
at the end of the tour. it takes 2-3h and provides you with a good
overview of the city and some historical facts. sandeman offers their
tours since 2004 and already counts more than 5 mio. visitors. the
tours are held in english and spanish. we have booked ours in
english.
meeting
point of all sandeman tours is the national monument on the central
dam square, right next to the departement store de bijenkorf.
there's
nothing better than to utilize the fair weather by experiencing
amsterdam from the water. the countless canals and more than 1500 are
reason enough to do so. i recommend the 100 highlights canal cruisetour, which, as the name suggests, covers all of amsterdams
sightseeing highlights.
the
tours departs at the holland international canal at prins hendrikkade
33a, across from the centraal station.
red lights district
rotlichtviertel
if
your legs haven't grown too tired in the evening, it is optional to
visit the red light district de wallen. it leaves little space for
imagination. the display windows in which the floozies present
themselves look almost grotesque. it is funny that here, amidst all
the brothels with their red lights, you can find the oude kerk, or
old church. it was built in the 13th century, but in the
meantime it was converted into an exhibition room for modern
photography. to again believe in human dignity it is worth visiting
the red light secrets museum of prostitution. the sexmuseum visit is
great for all those who want to get to know more about the history of
sex. it is also located at de wallen.
day 2
tag 2
thehermitage of amsterdam in my view was a rather inconspicuous
building compared to the belvedere in vienna, the old pinakothek in
munich or the eremitage in saint petersburg. the hermitage is also an
offshoot of the latter and was opened in 2009 by queen beatric and
the former russian president medwedew. here you can find a
considerable art collection ranging from rubens to matisse. when we
were there the museum featured an exhibition about the 'spanish
masters' with works by el greco, velázquez and goya.
the
hermitage is located directly on the bank of the amstel river. the
exact address is: amstel 51, 1018 EJ amsterdam.
shopping
we
spend most of our time with shopping on this second day in amsterdam. there are plenty of great shopping possibilities. especially de negenstraatjes (the nine little streets) offer loads of pretty little
design shops, cafés, restaurants, vintage shops and boutiques. those
who rather stick to mainstream labels are in safe hands at the
kalverstraat. and then there are departement stores such as the magnaplaza with labels like mango and sissy boy and de bijenkorf with
ralph lauren, isabel marant, diane von furstenberg and others.
but
there will be a more detailed post about the shopping possibilities
in amsterdam soon!
jordaan
jordaan
is still the most underestimated district of amstedam. it is located
not far from the main sights and a great possibility to flee the
masses of tourists. you'll mostly find locals here who love to hang
out one of the countless nice cafés, restaurants and shops.
day 3

tropenmuseum and i amsterdam
tropenmuseum und i amsterdam
we
have spent our last hours in the city with visiting the tropenmuseum
and making some outfit photos in front of the iconographic i amsterdam letters. this relatively new trademark of the city must be
the most successful marketing move of the visiting portal 'i amsterdam' and is found in front of the most popular sights in
amsterdam. the best known can be found in front of the rijksmuseum,
but we haven't managed to visit it because there wasn't enough time.
afterwards
we indulged in an obligatory and authentic dutch waffle with (or
without) nutella spread at dam square and a coffee at starbucks,
until finally getting back to our hotel and to sloterdijk station.
i hope that I could get you in the mood to visit amsterdam yourselves! the city is definitely a must-see and highly recommended for a visit. more posts with more advices and also some outfit posts are about to
follow within a short time!
Wow! :)
